A Fairytale Christmas in the Harz
Tucked against the Harz mountains, Wernigerode is famous for its colourful half-timbered houses, its storybook castle and its steam railway. In the run-up to Christmas, the old town fills with lights, market stalls and the smell of mulled wine.
Join us for a full day of history, photography and German railway nostalgia. We will watch the famous steam train set off, visit the neo-Gothic Wernigerode Castle above the town, have lunch on the historic Marktplatz, and wander the winding lanes of the old town on a relaxed photo tour.
The trip is led by Rafael of Raf Tours, who has been hosting group trips from Berlin for over two years.

🚂 Steam Train Spotting
We start the day with a coffee and a spectacular view as the famous steam train chugs out of the station. If timing doesn’t allow it in the morning, we will catch it later in the afternoon.
🏰 Wernigerode Castle
A group visit to the beautiful neo-Gothic castle perched above the town, with breathtaking views over the Harz mountains.
🏘️ Historic Marktplatz
Lunch in the heart of town, surrounded by some of Germany’s most vibrant half-timbered houses, including the iconic Town Hall.
🎄 Wernigerode Christmas Market
Soak up the festive atmosphere among the stalls, lights and Christmas trees of the old town.

A relaxed photo walk through the winding streets and hidden gems of the historic old town.

November in the Harz can be cold and wet, so please dress for the weather forecast on the day.
🚆How do we get there?
We will meet at Berlin Gesundenbrunnen at 7:00 AM and travel together by regional train to Wernigerode using the Deutschland-Ticket, both ways.
If you don’t have a Deutschland-Ticket, choose the Non-Deutschland Ticket Holder option when booking and we will arrange your train travel for an additional €51.
We expect to arrive back at Berlin Gesundenbrunnen at approximately 8:45 PM.
